The reason was not pedagogical caution. The reason was that the actual transmission of judgment happened in places written guides could not reach.
The watching-phase was not about memorizing technique. It was about absorbing the small corrections a master made without thinking.
The assisting-phase was not about saving the master’s time. It was about being present when something went wrong, and seeing how developed judgment recovered.
You can read every book ever written about your new domain.
AI can summarize them all in ten minutes.
None of that transmits the thing that matters most: what it feels like when you’re about to make a mistake.
That feeling lives in the texture of being wrong. Repeatedly. In low-stakes ways. Until your nervous system learns the warning signs.
The Curriculum for the Slow Path
For someone who’s accepted that the slow path is non-negotiable but doesn’t want to take six years to walk it.
Move #1 — Find the practitioners who’ve been wrong well.
Skip the gurus who only show wins.
Find the people who’ll tell you exactly what they got wrong, why they got it wrong, and what they updated. Their failure patterns are a map of where the domain breaks intuition. Including yours, since you’ll inherit the same blind spots if you’re not careful.
Most domains have these people. They are rarely the loudest voices. They’re the ones who, when you ask “what’s the thing that surprised you most when you were three years in?” — pause. And give you a real answer instead of a rehearsed one.
The model can summarize their books. It cannot transmit the texture of their losses.
That’s the thing you came for.
Move #2 — Make small bets with real consequence.
Real consequence is the part everyone skips.
You can run a thousand simulated scenarios and learn almost nothing. Five hundred dollars you actually risked teaches more than fifty thousand dollars of theory. A small project deployed to five real users teaches more than a perfect codebase deployed to none. A real client engagement at half your rate, on a problem in the new domain, teaches more than ten polished case studies of imaginary work.
The losing IS the curriculum.
AI lets you avoid losing by producing artifacts that never get tested. That is why the people using it most aggressively in a new domain look most expert and have learned the least.
Move #3 — Map where the model is wrong, in this specific territory.
Models are wrong differently in different fields.
In one domain they over-confidence on edge cases. In another they pattern-match too aggressively from adjacent industries. In another they miss operational realities anyone in the field knows by week two.
Spend the first ninety days noticing where the model is consistently wrong in your new territory. That pattern IS your map. It tells you where the actual expertise lives — in the negative space of what AI handles cleanly.
